H.E. Mr. Mircea Dan Geoana, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania attended the proceedings of UN Human Rights Commission on March 30, 2001.

From March 28 to March 30, 2001, H.E. Mr. Mircea Dan Geoana, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Chairman in Office of the OSCE was in Switzerland, with the occasion of the 57th annual session of the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva.

On this occasion he addressed the participants in his capacity of Chairman in Office of the OSCE and had a formal meeting with H.E. Mr. Moritz Leuenberger, President of the Confederation of Switzerland.

During his presence in Geneva, Mr. Geoana met with Mrs. Mary Robinson, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Ruud Lubbers, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and Mr. Jakob Kellenberger, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross. The priorities in the Human Dimension of the Romanian Chairmanship of the OSCE was one of the main topics of the meetings, as well as, practical modalities for joint efforts of the OSCE, the UN institutions and other international organizations in conflict prevention, crisis management and post-conflict reconstruction.

Aspects of the economic and social development of Romania were approached by Mr. Geona in his talks with Mr. Mike Moore, Director General of the World Trade Organization, Mr. Kamil Idris, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization and Mr. Klaus Schwab, President of the World Economic Forum. Mr. Geoana also met with representatives of the local academic and business community at an event organized jointly by the Harvard Club and the Diplomatic Club of Geneva. On this occasion Mr. Geoana presented the main strategic objectives of Romania in the economics and trade fields, the determination of Romanian Government to continue and enhance the economic and social reforms process, as well as the regional integration policy of Romania aimed at the accession to the European Union.

With Mr. Luciano Maiani, Director General of CERN, Mr. Geoana examined the current status of the scientific cooperation and the prospects of Romania's accession to this prominent scientific international organization. Mr. Geoana met with the community of Romanian physicists working at CERN.

Mr. Geoana had a meeting with His Eminency Dr. Alexandru Safran, Chief-Rabbi of Geneva and former Chief- Rabbi of Romania. During a short ceremony held on this occasion he presented Dr. Safran with the Grand Award delivered by the Romanian Cultural Foundation.
